Androgen Deprivation Therapy

Androgen Deprivation Therapy

(ADT), or chemical castration, is a common treatment for prostate cancer.  I started ADT in December 2016 and as of this writing have been on the treatment continuously for three years.

The side effects, as listed on the American Cancer Society website, have been life-changing.  A pause in masculinity. The cessation of cancer growth, and manhood. A lifesaving treatment.  Great freedom, unlooked for, much appreciated.

  • Reduced or absent sexual desire

  • Erectile dysfunction (impotence)

  • Shrinkage of testicles and penis

  • Hot flashes, which may get better or go away with time

  • Breast tenderness and growth of breast tissue (gynecomastia)

  • Osteoporosis (bone thinning), which can lead to broken bones

  • Anemia (low red blood cell counts)

  • Decreased mental sharpness

  • Loss of muscle mass

  • Weight gain

  • Fatigue

  • Increased cholesterol levels

  • Depression
