Cancer
Cancer
The diagnosis took me by surprise. Stage 4 prostate cancer. There had already been blood in my semen for months. I took photos of it and showed them to my urologist. He didn’t rush me to emergency surgery.
I realized it was serious when the nurses in the office wouldn’t look me in the eye. They held their gazes down. As I walked out of the office and into the burning Phoenix sun, I thought to call my mother. But how could I tell her that her youngest son had cancer? It felt impossible.
I called the American Cancer Society. They were great. They walked me through every line of my diagnosis sheet, answered all my questions and stayed on the phone with me until I could pull myself together.
